This comprehensive index evaluates 61 of the world’s largest mining companies through nine meticulously individually weighted indicators across six critical pillars: Carbon emissions, Diversity, Land disturbance, Water, Safety, and Social investment.
With more than 7000 points of data gathered, we provide a clear benchmark to assess mining companies' ESG performance. Our carefully selected indicators reflect the growing urgency for sustainable practices in an industry responsible for up to 7% of global carbon emissions.

In our quest to highlight best practices, we have profiled the top 10 mining companies based on their overall ESG scores according to our index. This rigorous analysis showcases these leaders and benchmarks their performance against key ESG data points across the top mining companies globally.
The ESG Mining Company Index also includes a benchmark of the best-performing companies in the chosen ESG themes: Carbon emissions, Diversity, Land disturbance, Water, Safety, and Social investment. This adds depth to the key reporting metrics that contribute to the overall ESG score.

About our methodology
Data was collected from the 2023 sustainability and annual reports of 61 of the biggest mining companies by market capitalisation (at year-end 2023). Companies were assessed across six categories, incorporating nine weighted indicators: Carbon emissions intensity (Scope 1 and 2), Scope 3 emissions reporting, Water withdrawals intensity, Water recycling/reuse rates, Land disturbance intensity, Injury rates, Women as a % of employees, Women as a % of the board, and Social investment intensity.
